About Counselling

What is it like to engage with therapy at Hope Counselling York? Counselling offers you the time and space so many of us need but often lack, especially when life becomes hard, or you feel less able to cope as you once did.

You can begin to tell your story at your own pace; you have the chance to explore what has brought you to counselling in the first place without judgement and your therapist and you, together, will establish some aims for you to work towards, to help you move forward and see the change in your life you’re hoping for.

You may be struggling with depression, low mood, anxiety, low self-esteem, a relationship breakdown, stress, issues at work, addiction, fertility issues, bereavement, the list goes on… or perhaps there is no label that can best describe where you are at right now. Whatever the case and wherever you are at, Hope Counselling York offer a confidential, professional, and non-judgmental service and environment for you to begin your counselling journey.

About Me

I work from a comfortable counselling room situated in the City Centre of York. I have nearly 15 years’ experience working in the field of mental health and I have concentrated my expertise within the field of Counselling and Psychotherapy since 2013. I work with clients within a short time frame (6-12 sessions), as well as providing sessions on a more long-term basis.

I am trained in the Humanistic perspective of counselling and psychotherapy. I base my work in a Person-centred approach, maintaining that the relationship and trust that is built within therapy is paramount. In tangent with this, I integrate other therapies such as CBT and theories that suggest our past experiences have an impact on our lives now.

I appreciate that reaching out to seek help and talk about how you feel can be a big step for some. If this is you, and you have some initial reservations or questions please feel free to contact me; it is important that you find a therapist you feel comfortable with.

Testimonials

Sarah has been like a breath of fresh air throughout my whole counselling experience. She takes a very personalised and friendly approach to each session, giving you the comfort needed to allow you to feel safe to discuss anything without judgement or fear.

Sarah really got down to the core of the issue for me without having to push or pull hard, simply just by asking the right questions and focussing my mind in the right direction at the right time. I was blown away by how quickly Sarah got me on the right track and brought my mind back to focus, she is a very committed and kind person who is genuinely as deeply focussed on your mental recovery journey as you are yourself.

I could not possibly recommend her service enough, I have dealt with other counsellors in the past, but none have worked as amazingly well, as dedicated and as closely by my side as Sarah.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where are you based?

I see people both in-person and online via Zoom. I work out of a therapeutic office space at:

    The Citadel,
    Gillygate,
    York.
    YO31 7EA.

Scroll down for a map of my location and to make an enquiry or to book a session click here.

  • By car: There are a couple of car parks very close by. One is the Union Terrace Car park, which is a 1 minute walk away and Monkbar car park, which is a 5 minute walk away at most.

By bus: the number 1, 5 and 6 buses all stop right outside the building where my therapeutic office is based.

As I am based in the city centre I am not much of a walk away from other bus stop locations. For reference the address is The Citadel, Gillygate, York. YO31 7EA

  • Unfortunately, the room I currently use for in-person therapy is not accessible to wheelchair users or those who struggle with one flight of stairs. However, if you’d like to make an enquiry I would be able to enquire about using an alternative accessible space. Failing this, I also offer video appointments online.

  • Each session costs £45 and is payable by bank transfer or cash. I do offer a concessionary rate for those who are unemployed, in full-time education or those who have refugee status.

  • In your first appointment we will begin an initial assessment. Like all other sessions it lasts for one hour and is where I will ask questions about your physical and mental health, in order to create a well-rounded picture of what your life is like right now. I will also ask about any support network you have and about any therapy you have had in the past. I will also go through the necessary details of what you can expect working with me. It is also an opportunity for you to get a feel for what therapy is like; you can ask questions or discuss any reservations you might have.

We will also begin to establish some goals and aims for you to work towards, based on what you hope to gain from engaging with the therapeutic process. This is usually completed within one session but can sometimes take longer and that is OK.

  • You can expect a phone call from me of up to 20 minutes, where I can explain more about the way I work w ith clients and it can give you the opportunity to think about whether this is something you would like to commit to before booking a session with me. It is also an opportunity for you to ask more specific questions; practical, about my experience and expertise or about your individual circumstances.

  • Yes, I see people online on some evenings via Zoom only. The latest appointment I have face to face is 4.45pm.

  • Please use the contact form below for any enquiries or to book in an introductory phone call or initial assessment. I will aim to get back to you within 24 hours.
